Aside from the pandemic, the presidential polls in the United States undoubtedly dominated news headlines in 2020.
And as Joe Biden swore in as number 46, along with it some massive changes including a shift in climate change policies. A development welcomed by American youth activist and journalist Ilana Cohen.
“I think these last four years, at least for me and I imagine for a lot of other people, were really characterized by a sense of defensiveness — it was a very reactionary both in terms of at least my writing and reporting and my organizing. There was always this kind of need to hold the federal government, the Trump White House, accountable for all the destruction that it was perpetrating.”
Cohen added that under a Biden presidency, she expects her approach to reporting and organizing to be forward-looking.
“I finally feel like there is real potential to protest and not just yell into a void. There is a clear target, the Biden White House, that needs to be held accountable for making real systemic change, for implementing policies that were unimaginable over these last four years because we were so preoccupied with just trying to stave off measures that decimated very basic human rights.”
