What role does citizen climate journalism play in the development of policies and achieving progress in the climate space?
If citizens are empowered to tell their stories and explain their climate reality, better policy making could help boost civic participation and engagement. That’s why, Climate Tracker with the support of The Cropper Foundation, recently carried out its first Citizen Climate Journalism Fellowship to train citizen representatives from Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago and build their capacity to communicate climate change.
Now, we are excited to share with you the results of this fellowship through a virtual Caribbean community hangout aimed at giving exposure to the insightful stories our fellows have successfully produced.
Throughout October and November 2022, 10 journalists got training from regional experts, covering:
- Climate change and climate science in the Caribbean context
- Keys to effective climate journalism
- The Caribbean energy sector: past, present and future
- The social and human elements of climate crisis and the role of local communities in climate action
After training, they received 1-1 mentoring and support from Climate Tracker’s Caribbean team to publish 1 climate story.
In this webinar, you will hear from a selection of our fellows, who will share their fellowship experience and shed light on the story they published. From challenges the Surinamese fisheries sector is facing due to climate change to Trinidad and Tobago’s attempts to break free from the oil and gas industry, our fellows will discuss the importance and impact of citizen climate journalism in their country.

GET TO KNOW CLIMATE TRACKER
Climate Tracker (CT) is a non-profit organisation that aims to support, train and encourage more and better climate journalism around the world. We believe in the power of journalism, but we know that many young journalists don’t have the training, resources, or support to tell the stories they want to tell. We know that this challenge is even greater in those countries most affected by the climate crisis. Learn more.
