We’ve wrapped up our #DietChangeNotClimateChange competition, and we’re going through the entries now. Thank you to those of you who submitted!
On the heels of the recent IPCC report, we’re seeing climatechange appear a lot more in the news. This is something we’re happy to see, and we hope this surge in climate coverage will motivate governments to take substantive action.
Some good news in Malaysia, for example: following aRadioNZ report that developed countries were dumping thousands of tonnes of plastic into the country, 30 illegal plastic recycling plants have just been shut down. Tahniah!

WHAT WE’RE READING
UN Says Climate Genocide Is Coming. It’s Actually Worse Than That. The last time David Wallace-Wells wrote about climate change, he almost broke the internet. Now he’s back, with a piece for NY Magazine, describing the realities of 2 degree warming (actually we’re slated for 4 degree warming by the end of the century).
“How long we continue to is, really, up to us, which is to say it will be determined in the province of politics, which is to say public panic like that produced by the IPCC report can be a very productive form of policy pressure,” he writes.
Kids’ climate change lawsuit against federal government can proceed. Young people are holding the American government accountable for environmental destruction. The trial is cleared to begin October 29, and involves 21 children and youth.
In the meantime, also check out this piece by The Atlantic, covering a statement that suggests Trump may be shifting his views ever so slightly on climate change. “I don’t think it’s a hoax,” Trump said on Sunday. Took him long enough.
What else will we lose? The Smithsonian says that the next victims of climate change will be beer, coffee, and chocolate. The New York Times and CNN are both covering heritage sites threatened by climate change. On the list? The Blue Mosque in Turkey, Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Easter Island. Yes, the whole island.
